Normal river height in Augusta.  Scroll down for winter and spring flooding.

Ice jam on the Kennebec River at the City of Augusta in March of 2003. The jam broke before significant flooding occurred that would have caused damage to the commercial buildings on the west bank of the river.  Ice jam flooding is very unpredictable in the Northeast. However, they frequently cause much more serious damages because they create flood depths often deeper than a free flow base flood event (100-year flood).

Repeated flooding can take a toll on buildings. Mitigation is often overlooked as a long term solution. Its benefits may offset the ravages of flooding and reduce the long term costs of deterioration and weakened structural support. Photo by Lou Sidell 2005.
